In my mentor session today I discussed my feedback as well as my plans over the coming weeks.
My feedback for my proposal was as follows:
"You have an interesting idea that has plenty of potential for using your skills to develop a really interesting collection of decorative pieces. The have identified a good range of competitors – this analysis is cursory, you need to provide more in depth detail – what price range do these companies provide pieces for, who is wearing them and how are they being marketed? Having three categories of product is a good idea: it will allow you to think in terms of producing collections. The designs need a lot of development, I would advise you to just take nature as a starting point and then explore how you might create more abstract patterns, perhaps through using repetition, inversion and just experimenting with pattern and mark making techniques. Draw, scan the drawings, play with them on the computer, replicate, trace; the design process needs to be a lot more involved in order for you to begin to produce interesting designs. Bring sketchbooks into tutorials and we can talk through the design process and your ideas on a weekly basis. It looks as through your tests with the gelatine were useful, when do your propose to start testing in silicone – this needs to happen asap. Using the company logo as the test design to promote the products on the website is limiting, I would advise that you use some of the designs that will show to greater effect what this product is. In summary this idea has great potential but you need to allow more time to experiment with designs in order to produce something really worth promoting and you should amend your production schedule accordingly."
My feedback addressed where my proposal was lacking slightly so I will be following this up in a further blog post.
I am aware that the designs need development and have begun looking for more inspiration and sketching more as well as planning a shoot using an OHP to project the designs onto the body. These will be shown in a further blog post.
I will begin to experiment with silicone during this week to get an accurate view of how the pieces will look, feel and blend.
The main points from my mentor session were that my schedule needs to be adhered to and updated accordingly week by week. I will be posting my schedule updates weekly on here. Also I need to become more involved with photographing my processes and experiments and discussing them whether they are positive or negative experiences as these are all part of the design process and this reflective blog is the place for that.
